Australia Refuses Claims of Student Visa Ban for Indian Applicants from Select States

New Delhi : Australia has firmly denied recent media reports alleging that it has “banned” student visa applications from Indian nationals in specific states, including Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, a spokesperson stated, “There is no ban or restriction on student visa applications from any Indian state. These claims are entirely false.”

The official further highlighted that over 125,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in Australian institutions, underscoring India’s position as the second-largest source of international students in the country. “Australia remains committed to processing Indian student visa applications under international guidelines. Indian students are an essential part of our educational system and wider community,” the spokesperson added.

The clarification comes in response to media reports circulated a day earlier, which suggested that Australia, along with the United States and Canada, had introduced stricter immigration rules for Indian students. According to those reports, several universities had allegedly paused processing visa applications from six Indian states.

The reports sparked anxiety among students and education consultants, particularly in Gujarat—a region known for high numbers of student visa applicants to Australia.
